What to do when you feel bad

In these times it's hard to feel good. You get out of bed thinking this is all a dream and it seems like not leaving your house has always been the norm. This can lead us to a state where we feel sad or unmotivated, but it's in our hands to change it—and change it for the better.

In these times it's hard to feel good. You get out of bed thinking this is all a dream and it seems like not leaving your house has always been the norm. This can lead us to a state where we feel sad or unmotivated, but it's in our hands to change it—and change it for the better.

Recognize what you feel and let it out

Emotions can overwhelm us (sadness, frustration, despair, uncertainty, etc.), and even though we feel them 24 hours a day it's important to recognize them. Letting them flow is the best we can do. It's not wrong to admit we're not okay. Prolonging a feeling only accumulates that emotion, boxes it in and releases it in a worse way.

If you don't know what you're really feeling, try talking about it with someone... or even with something, like a stuffed animal. Putting our emotions into words as we talk helps us identify what we feel, whatever it is. Just pay special attention to the words you say—in them you'll find what's holding you back.

"No pain is eternal, everything passes and I know you'll be okay"

The secret is to recognize what you feel, adopt that feeling as something natural, something that will be with you for a while and then leave.

Learn to create with what you feel

This is something that was very hard for me to learn. When we feel something we're told to just let it out, but they don't tell us what to do with what comes out. For that you need to create. Don't let your emotions consume you—release them gradually through creation. It can be a drawing, a song, a letter, a video or anything you can make.

In my case I'm a programmer. What helps me most is creating an application or playing with my favorite tech when I feel sad or in a rough patch. Create with whatever you're most passionate about, and if you don't know what that is, the fun part will be discovering what you can use to focus what you feel. With luck you might find a new hobby or even your calling.

Keep going

Once you've released what felt like a weight on your body, try to continue. Keep going with your work and your life—don't let a bad moment stop who you are. It's true it's not easy but it is possible, so believe in yourself and move forward. We live in a world that hit pause and you have the chance to move faster than it.

What if it doesn't work?

Some problems aren't solved with these three simple steps. If you need help try to find it in a friend or a health professional. The point is for you to feel better—don't be ashamed to ask for help. We live in difficult times and we need to take care of ourselves by every means we can.
